TEACHING

Alongside my core curriculum teaching of English from Key Stages 3-5, I teach skills-based courses in critical thinking, convene sessions on the concept of freedom of speech and lead Oxbridge preparation courses for students in London. At Oxford University, I have run tutorials and seminars, supervised undergraduate dissertations and lectured for the Department of Continuing Education. In the UK secondary sector, I have taught IGCSE Language and Literature, IB Higher Level English, Cambridge Pre-U and A-level English. My expertise includes a range of authors, texts and contexts from the seventeenth and twentieth centuries and a specialist knowledge of cultural politics between England and Ireland. I am especially interested in teaching and developing courses that examine the impact of nationalism and cosmopolitanism on modern literature and culture. I am keen to respond to student and staff concerns about topics that are either not covered within the confines of the syllabus or are approached differently in a mainstream educational environment.

Here is a link to my teaching philosophy.

Here is an excerpt from a speech I gave on university scholarship.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS (secondary and tertiary)

  • "His witty, highly interesting lessons have inspired me greatly. Dr Hutton-Williams has not only helped me to express my opinions better, but also has inspired me to find my own way when formulating them. I am deeply appreciative for the great interest he has taken in my wider endeavours."

  • "I came out of sessions feeling inspired. Dr Hutton-Williams contributed to my intellectual development; he allowed me to engage with my academic knowledge in a deeper way, to establish new links between the books I had studied at school or read at home and to reflect them through a new perspective."

  • "Dr Hutton-Williams ensures there is a relaxed environment, which makes learning more enjoyable."

  • "Our tutorials were challenging and I really enjoyed our conversations and debates. I really appreciated him taking the time to get to know me, my interests and making adjustments to the course when necessary. He was really helpful when giving feedback and going over things that I had previously misunderstood."

  • "I began the process feeling pretty overwhelmed but with both my experience of the Oxford ELAT and the interview, I felt so much more prepared and confident having known that we'd gone through all of it with Dr Hutton-Williams already, and think that was a big part of me feeling comfortable enough to give it my all. His sessions were so valuable and encouraging. As a result of his help and guidance throughout the process, the whole thing seemed so much more manageable."

  • "Dr Hutton-Williams can offer a philosophical and very advanced perspective to English that no one else can which makes the texts we study more fascinating. In addition, his resources are very helpful and allow us to know how to improve for next time."

  • "In this era of increasingly dystopian, internet-based work which we do by ourselves, it is a breath of fresh air for most of the lesson to be talking to one another about the subject, being constantly challenged in group discussions and shared learning throughout the class."

  • "I have loved English lessons, especially discussions and presentations about Joyce. It is always great to have a world expert teaching you."

  • "With Dr Hutton-Williams’ help, I began to feel more comfortable during lessons and my essay technique has greatly improved as a result. I found the exam texts so interesting and am so grateful he broadened my literary awareness."

  • "Dr Hutton-Williams’ gave me two great years in a subject I did not enjoy before he became my teacher. Under him I’ve improved significantly as an English student and I really enjoyed our lessons."
